Protection plans, explained

You protect your phone.
What about your car?

Many people pay a monthly fee to protect a phone. For most families, a car is the second-largest purchase they make, after their home. Here is what each optional plan does, in plain words, so you can decide before you sit down to sign.

Example: AppleCare+ for iPhone 17 Pro, which includes theft and loss coverage, is $13.99 a month (Tom's Guide, Sept. 2025). Vehicle plan prices vary by plan, vehicle and term and are not comparable to phone plans.

A finance manager explaining an option to a couple

Know this before you sign

  • Every plan is optional. None is required to buy the car or to be approved for financing.
  • Check what you already have: Acura's factory warranty (4 years / 50,000 miles basic, 6 years / 70,000 miles powertrain) and your own insurance.
  • Ask to see the written contract. It shows what is covered, what is not, and how to cancel.
  • Most plans can be cancelled later for a partial refund of unused time, under the terms in each contract.
  • In New Jersey, a GAP waiver gives you at least 30 days to cancel for a full refund if no benefit was paid.

What each plan does

Exact coverage and terms are always in the contract our finance manager reviews with you.

GAP

If the car is totaled or stolen, covers some or all of what you still owe beyond the insurance payout. Matters most with a small down payment or a longer loan.

Tire and wheel

Repairs or replaces tires and wheels damaged by potholes, nails and road debris. Some plans also cover curb damage.

Interior protection

A protective treatment plus coverage for certain spills and stains on seats and carpets. Popular with families and pet owners.

Exterior and dent

Paint protection plus paintless repair of small dents and door dings; some plans add windshield chip repair.

Key replacement

Replaces a lost, stolen or damaged key fob, which can be costly to replace and program.

Extended protection

Pays for covered repairs after a breakdown, usually after the factory warranty ends. Helps if you keep cars a long time or drive a lot.

Leasing? Ask about excess wear and tear protection, which covers lease-end charges for damage beyond normal wear, up to a limit.

Five questions to ask our finance team

  1. What does this plan cover that my factory warranty and insurance do not?
  2. What is the total cost, and how does it change my monthly payment?
  3. Is there a deductible, and where can I get repairs done?
  4. How do I cancel, and how is a refund calculated?
  5. Can I see the written contract before I decide?
